Lab app survey

I am about to start conducting a survey of uses of lab apps.

If you work in a lab in any capacity, anywhere in the world, please click here to take survey.  It contains 10 simple questions and will only take a couple of minutes to complete.  Thank you!

Sharing science is a crime – Opinion – Al Jazeera English

Sharing science is a crime – Opinion – Al Jazeera English.

Fascinating article by Charles Davis about ‘openness’ in scientific research.

If you found a cure for cancer would you patent it?  ‘Of course not!’  Well this article warns against institutions patenting employees’ work on their behalf.

The original article is well worth reading.

Did you #Mendelete?

I’d be really interested to hear your thoughts on Mendeley being bought by Elsevier.  Did you #Mendelete?  If so, what was your motivation?  If not, what do you think all the fuss is about?

I’ve read a lot about open access concerns, worries about monetisation of clicks and user data, and more general accusations of ‘selling out’.  What are your thoughts on Mendeley being bought by Elsevier?

What apps do you use in the lab?

Of all the hundreds of apps available for laboratory scientists, these are the 5 that are mentioned to me most often

Molecules to visualise molecular structures

Wolfram Alpha to find out everything about anything

Papers to search PubMed and other databases

DailyCalc or any of a number of different apps for quick calculations

LabTimer or similar to time gels, lunchbreaks or anything else
